Eswatini Expert Joins SADC Emergency Response Team Deployed to Madagascar Following Tropical Cyclone Gezani 

Eswatini continues to play an active role in strengthening regional disaster preparedness and response through its contribution to the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Emergency Response Team (ERT). Earlier this year, an emergency management specialist from the National Disaster Risk Management Authority (NDRMA) joined experts from across SADC Member States in a regional deployment to Madagascar following the devastating impacts of Tropical Cyclone Gezani. 

The cyclone caused significant damage to homes, infrastructure, and livelihoods, leaving thousands of people in need of humanitarian assistance. In response, SADC activated its Emergency Response Team to support the Government of Madagascar in assessing the impacts, identifying priority needs, and strengthening coordination of response and recovery efforts. 

The deployment brought together disaster management professionals from several SADC Member States, reflecting the region’s commitment to collective action and mutual support during emergencies. Through joint assessments and coordination efforts, the team provided critical technical support that informed humanitarian interventions and recovery planning. 

Eswatini’s participation in the mission demonstrates the country’s growing contribution to regional disaster risk management initiatives and highlights the expertise available within NDRMA. The deployment provided a valuable opportunity to exchange experiences, strengthen operational skills, and gain practical insights from a large-scale emergency response operation. 

As climate-induced disasters continue to increase across Southern Africa, regional cooperation remains an essential pillar of effective disaster management. Experiences gained through deployments such as the Madagascar mission contribute directly to strengthening national systems and enhancing preparedness for future emergencies. 

The mission also aligns with the objectives of the Disaster Risk Management Act, 2025, which promotes stronger preparedness, coordination, and collaboration at both national and regional levels. By participating in regional emergency response mechanisms, Eswatini continues to strengthen its capacity to protect lives, livelihoods, and development gains from disaster risks. 

The deployment serves as a testament to the value of regional solidarity and demonstrates how Member States can work together to address complex humanitarian challenges while building a more resilient Southern Africa.
