BUILDING RESILIENCE FROM THE GROUND UP
January 21, 2026The National Disaster Management Agency (NDMA)CEO Victor Mahlalela has commended the individuals and institutions recognised at this year’s Temvelo Awards, saying their environmental work plays an important role in strengthening Eswatini’s resilience to disasters.
The awards ceremony, hosted by the Eswatini Environment Authority, brought together government leaders, civil society, private sector representatives and environmental practitioners to honour innovative initiatives in ecosystem restoration, water-resource protection, land management and waste-reduction efforts.
Prime Minister Russell Mmiso Dlamini delivered the keynote address and called for stronger national commitment to environmental protection. He noted that sustainable management of natural resources is central to the country’s ability to withstand climate-related shocks.
“Our environment remains our first line of defence,” the Prime Minister said. “When we restore degraded land, protect our rivers and improve waste systems, we are strengthening our capacity to face future hazards. Every Liswati has a role to play.”
NDMA officials who attended the event said the work recognised at the awards directly contributes to reducing disaster risks. They emphasised that healthy ecosystems help buffer communities from extreme weather events and support long-term national preparedness.
Siboniso Mavuso, Director Early Warning said the agency values the efforts showcased at the ceremony. “The projects honoured through the Temvelo Awards are helping communities become safer and more resilient,” he said. “Environmental protection and disaster risk reduction go hand in hand, and we applaud every winner and participant for their contribution.”
NDMA encourages communities, schools and local institutions to adopt practices that safeguard natural resources, as simple actions such as preventing land degradation, improving waste disposal and keeping water sources clean can reduce vulnerability to hazards.
The Temvelo Awards are held annually to promote sustainable environmental practices across the country. NDMA said the initiatives celebrated this year demonstrate the growing national commitment to climate resilience and support Eswatini’s efforts to build safer communities.
