NDMA Commends Environmental Champions at Temvelo Awards
January 21, 2026It is no secret that a significant number of disaster losses in Eswatini, especially during heavy rains and storms, have been traced back to weak structural designs and non-compliance with building standards. As climate-related hazards intensify across the region, promoting resilient construction has become one of the most practical ways to safeguard lives, livelihoods, and community assets.
Recognising this need, the National Disaster Management Agency (NDMA), with support from the Japanese International Cooperation, is leading a national effort to empower community-based artisans with knowledge and skills in resilient construction techniques. This initiative aims to build a generation of local builders who are not only skilled in their craft but are also conscious of the hazards that threaten poorly built structures.
The engagement, held at the Manzini Regional Administration Offices, brought together artisans from different communities, each playing a critical role in shaping the safety and strength of the nation’s housing landscape. Through hands-on demonstrations and expert-led sessions, participants are exposed to construction methods that improve structural integrity and reduce disaster risk.
Key partners such as the Construction Industry Council are also part of this ongoing collaboration, ensuring that the skills shared align with national standards and building codes. When builders understand and apply disaster-resilient techniques, every home constructed contributes to Eswatini’s broader shield against future hazards.
The long-term vision is to transform Eswatini’s built environment into one that stands firm against natural forces. Each properly constructed home becomes a story of safety restored, vulnerability reduced, and resilience strengthened.
